Wahine Angler Lands Award-Winning 522-lb Blue Marlin Saturday!

Congrats to Lynn Sorenson and team on this 522-pound catch!

Four hundred and forty participants in 73 colorfully decorated charter boats scattered in all directions from Kailua Bay in the waters off Hawaii Island’s Kona Coast under sunny blue skies Saturday morning.

The largest women’s billfish tournament in Hawaii, and possibly the largest women’s billfish tournament in the world, offered big fishing action for the 18th annual Huggo’s Wahine Fishing Tournament.

The winning fish was caught by women anglers on board the “Maggie Joe” — a  522-pound Pacific Blue Marlin, caught by angler Lynn Sorenson with Captain Mike DeRego –  and earned them the First place team overall position.  Fighting time was a short 38 minutes.  It was the only fish brought in over 300 pounds, the minimum weight limit for cash prize consideration.

Huggo's Hosts the Tournament of the Summer Season!

Water fights erupt during the 2012 Wahine Tournament's decorated boat parade!

The 18th Annual Huggo’s Wahine Tournament takes place this Saturday, July 27, 2013. This year’s theme, “Gods and Goddesses”, celebrates the golden age of the Roman Empire when Gods and Goddesses mingled with Emperors and Empresses and even a few gladiators and centurions no doubt!

This fun-filled fishing tournament, with prizes for the best decorated boat and best costumed team, benefits Family Support Hawaii (FSH), formally Family Support Services of West Hawaii.

"Edible" Huggo's!

The summer 2013 issue of Edible Hawaiian Islands magazine has just hit the news stands and Corporate Chef Ken Schloss talks Kona kampachi — one of his favorite fishes that’s served up frequently in a variety of preparations at Huggo’s.

The four-page feature includes these comments from our stellar chef:

“Hawaiian Kampachi is a uniquely flavored fish with a slightly nutty and a distinctly fresh, clean taste. While it’s wonderfully silky in texture, it’s also firm enough to prepare on the grill — one of my favorite cooked preparation.”

“It’s an incredibly versatile fish, perhaps best served raw — sashimi or poke — but it’s also delicious sautéed, pan-seared, steamed or poached. One of our signature dishes at Huggo’s is the Kampachi Poke Tower.”

Chef Chris Takes a Turn at the Wheel!

Mahalo to Mayor Billy Kenoi and our Hawaii Island road crew for improving the roadway fronting both Huggo’s and On the Rocks (our sister restaurant just next door).

Our Chef Chris Fagan,  couldn’t help himself — you know boys and their love of big equipment! He jumped at the chance to give it a try, ‘er, well really, just a chance to climb on board! Chef Chris is the long-time chef for our catering business, Paradise Gourmet.  It’s a smoother ride now making your way to both restaurants and we look forward to welcoming you soon!

Overheard at Huggo’s just last night, “This is the best Caesar salad anywhere!” Followed later by, “We’ll be back again for this ono (delicious) ono!

Looks Great...Tastes Even Better!

 

Huggo's new menu item, Opah

Sous Chef Carlos Nava snapped this picture perfect dish just as it came out of the kitchen at Huggo’s.  This dish – one of many nightly specials showcased at the restaurant – features Herb-Panko Crusted Opah with Asparagus and Black Forbidden Rice in a Ginger Guava Sauce, topped with Island Fresh Pineapple-Mango relish.

Huge Success for "Huggo's for a Cure!"

Huggo's Relay for Life 2013

Despite some unforgiving weather and a sickly captain, Timothy and the “Huggo’s for a Cure” gang did an amazing job at this year’s Relay for Life in Kailua-Kona. With a goal of $1,500.00 it was great to see the team actually surpassed their goal by over$400.00 by earning $1,935.00!

They're Back -- Frequent Guests from California!

Part-time Hawaii Island residents — Allan, Linda, Karen and Martha — have returned for their annual three month stay in Holualoa, the colorful, historica town located up mauka (toward the mountains) above Huggo’s and On the Rocks. According to them, on arrival they made a fast track to On the Rocks barely stopping to unpack their bags. It was Mai Tais all around to celebrate their return to their island home!

Celebrate the 4th in Huggo's Style!

Fireworks over Kailua-Kona Bay -- the view from Huggo's!

The fireworks begin at 8 p.m. but our chefs will be firing up specials, including our famous barbecued ribs, all evening long and our bartenders have come up with some tasty adult beverage specials for the holiday celebration. Of course, everything on our classic menu will also be on offer.

Come for the ono food and drink, and enjoy the show. Please note, however, that in order to accommodate all dining reservations, a time limit will apply to the tables of  early evening diners (reservations made between 5:30 and 6 p.m.). Mahalo for your understanding.
