Talking Story with Shirley!
It’s no surprise that Shirley von Platen Luder, Hawaii Island kama’aina (long-time resident), is a regular at Huggo’s and Huggo’s on the Rocks just next door. Shirley founded Huggo’s with husband Hugo in 1969 with the motto “good food and good fun”. Shirley says, “It’s always been a great gathering spot and back in the day you could get a great steak or morning-caught catch of the day and then pile it on at the salad bar.” Things have changed a bit since then, she says laughing, but the philosphy remains the same. After 14 successful years — and hard work that the industry demands — she says she was ready to hand over the reigns to son Eric and enjoy the role of pampered guest! “Of course we didn’t have nearly the staff that Eric has put together over the years which has, in large part, allowed him to really grow the business — it’s wonderful!” Eric opened the popular toes-in-the-sand dining and entertainment establishment, Huggo’s on the Rocks, in 1998 and Shirley says, “We’re all tremendously excited about the new property opening up north this April.” She’s referring to Eric’s latest venture, the Lava Lava Beach Club now in its final construction phase at the southern end of Waikoloa Beach Resort. The oceanfront club — just a few steps from the beach — will include a restaurant, bar and special event venues, as well as four guest hales (beach cottages). Casual, barefoot chic is the vibe with an invitation to come just as you are — board shorts and lava lava wraps encouraged! Stay tuned for updates as the opening date approaches and, in the meantime, enjoy a sneak peak provided by the photos below.
